Life Happens. That’s Okay!

Yup, it’s been a while.  Did Ms. B. run out of happy?  Of course not!  But I have been busy.  What with?  Life.  Every aspect of it:  Funerals.  Weddings!  Babies!!!  Lots of emotions, lots of tears both sad and happy.  Lots of stress and lots of joy!

Oh, by the way, none of those events were ‘mine’ – I didn’t die, get married or have a baby.  Just thought I’d clarify that point.

Anyway, what was I saying?  Oh yes, I was making my excuses for not blogging regularly.  The excuse I’ve chosen is ‘Life’.  Original?  Not really.  Valid?  I think so.

The funny thing is I think about writing a lot, but I don’t take the time to actually do it.  There’s a couple of reasons for this:

  1. I’m lazy.  When I get home from work I don’t want to do more work.  While blogging is fun, it does require brain power, which I don’t usually feel like exercising.
  2. I don’t like my laptop, but don’t want to sit at my desktop.  Yes, this is a completely ridiculous excuse that barely makes sense.  Yes, I am aware there are multiple ways I can solve this problem.  Yes, I do this in other aspects of my life and they are just as illogical.
  3. Writing takes time.  Time which I may or may not have.  And even when I do have time, my mind is not always ready to write!  Or at least to write anything worth reading.
  4. I have other things to do.  Yup.  Work, RPGs, knitting, exercising, spending time with family and friends, reading, playing video games, trying to eat healthy, remembering to pray, creating card games, plotting world domination, cross stitch, cuddling the cats:  prioritizing is hard!

So blogging isn’t my top priority in life at the moment.  But it is on the list!  I plan to keep writing, even if it is not often.  Gotta start somewhere, you know?  Hopefully you’ll stick around to keep reading.

Much Love,

Ms. B.

ABC – Always Be Crafting

I 100% fall into the female stereotype of enjoying crafts.  I’m also genetically predisposed to it – both Mumsy and her Mumsy are/were crafters.  Grand-Mumsy was so good at knitting and crocheting that she could do it without looking, while reading a book!

Here is a list of some of my favorite craft activities:

  • Knitting:  No duh.  I explained that in my last post.  Still holds true.  Knitting comes most easily to me, within reason.  I’ve only ever knit rectangular things, and I’ve only ever used circular needles.  Straight needles feel very foreign to me.  One day, if I’m feeling brave, I may attempt to make a sock.
  • Jewelry: As with knitting, Mumsy taught me how to make jewelry.  My favorite thing to make is earrings – especially Christmas themed ones.  I am such a sucker for earrings that look like Christmas lights!  The other cool thing about making jewelry?  I can apply the same skills to fix/modify jewelry that I own or purchase.  Like changing out the earring wires for sterling silver when the ones I bought are made of nickle and make my ears itch!
  • Needlepoint:  I’ve only done a couple of needlepoint crafts before, and never anything complicated.  I’d say behind knitting, this is the next craft I want to adventure out into more.  I really want to make one of those cute tissue box covers!  I know, I am just the coolest person ever.
  • Painting Miniatures:  Nerd warning for this one.  I’m talking about painting pawns for the characters I play in Pathfinder.  Actually, Mumsy taught me how to do this one too, and then I taught The Boyfriend.  I’d say he enjoys this craft more than me, but it is absolutely a satisfying activity.  You just have to make sure you are using small enough paint brushes!
  • Rug Hooking:  I tried this for the first time last year, and was very satisfied with the results.  It is basically paint-by-numbers with yarn to make a rug.  I think the best thing about this type of craft is that it is very forgiving.  If you make an error, it is easy to correct, and it doesn’t require a large amount of precision to make the end result look good.  The only thing I didn’t enjoy was binding the ends after I’d finished the rug.  I cheated and used iron-on rug binding.

Making this list has reminded me of at least three different craft projects that I’ve started but have not yet finished…. Guess I know what I’m doing after posting this!

Happy Crafting!

My Plan to Survive 2018 – Knitting & Pathfinder

Gotta say, 2018 has been a bit rough so far….

Let’s start with our car being SET ON FIRE on NEW YEAR’S EVE by some nice people playing with fireworks.  Yup.  Not Joking.  Here’s a picture:

No, really.  That’s our car.

Needless to say, that caused an interesting beginning to the new year!  One might say we started the new year with a BANG!!!  Get it!?!  Wanna guess how many times that joke has been made now? A lot.

On the plus side, no one was injured, and we got a new car!  With seat warmers!  I will never go back to a car without them.  Even when summer comes around I plan on blasting the AC but sitting on a toasty seat!

Looking back, the rest of the year hasn’t been that bad.  Just normal life stressors.  So much to do, so little time!

Anyway, the two things that I’m relying on to keep me sane, as explained in the title of this post are knitting and Pathfinder.

Mumsy taught me to knit when I was a kid, and I never really stopped.  If you’ve never knitted before, I recommend giving it a try.  There are countless instructional videos available online to help you get started.  Back to the point though, knitting is making me especially happy this year!  It’s an activity that requires brain power, but not too much.  Plus, I love the act of creating something, especially something that can have a practical use, like a blankie or a scarf (I only knit square/rectangular things).

If you don’t know what Pathfinder is, you are missing out!  You’re also obviously not a nerd like me.  Or at least not a TTRPG nerd.  TTRPG stands for Tabletop Role Playing Game, in case ya didn’t know.  Pathfinder is a TTRPG.  Isn’t learning fun!  So, I play Pathfinder, along with Boyfriend and Mumsy.  We sit around with some other close friends and roleplay to tell an exciting fantasy story.  It’s all the fun of acting without the pressure of auditioning!

This post feels a bit scatterbrained, but I’m just gonna go with it.  Conclusions:  Life can be hard, but you gotta find the Happy!  Right now, for me, that means knitting and Pathfinder.  Creating something with my hands, and playing pretend with friends.  Sounds pretty good to me.

Much Love,

Ms. B.

The BFF and I have known each other since SECOND GRADE!!!  We were in the same class, but we sealed our friendship when we performed ‘Lollipop’ together in the talent show.  And yes, we were fabulous!

From second grade through senior year, we called each other almost every day after school.  The BFF moved away for university, but our friendship didn’t end with that.  Thank goodness for the modern age of technology!  Between calling, texting, and social media, we were able to keep up with each other’s doings.  We made a tradition of me going to visit her every Halloween (some of my favorite memories from college).

By societal standards we are both adults now, and doing a pretty decent job of it I’d say.  We both have big-girl jobs, aren’t living with our parents, and are in steady, committed relationships.  The BFF was my Maid of Honor in my wedding this past summer (duh) and she did my makeup as well (stunning!).  And of course she threw me a perfect bachelorette party!

We don’t talk every day now, but that’s not really an issue.  The BFF and I know that silence doesn’t mean anger.  We’ll text each other randomly, and often – at LEAST once a week.  We talk on the phone, and meet up when we can.  It’s all good.  We’re best friends, and nothing will change that.

This doesn’t even begin to scratch the amazingness that is the BFF and our friendship!  More will be revealed with time.

Until then, I leave you with a lyric from Weezer’s My Best Friend (artistic emphasis added by me):

You’re my BEST FRIEND,
and I LOVE YOU, and I LOOOOOVE you,

First Post of 2018

Long Time no talk!  What did I learn in 2017?  Blogging is hard, and I’m a procrastinator.

That being said, Happy New Year!  I know, January is almost over.  Whatever.  The year is still young!

Goals for 2018:

  • Blog more – obvious, but true.
  • Exercise – specifically to train to be able to do proper push-ups!
  • Experiment in the kitchen in the following areas:
    • Crockpot
    • Smoothies
    • Soups
  • Knit, Knit, Knit! (I am making a gift)

I have a lot of things I wish to talk about, and I do have time to write….The problem is making myself sit down and do it!  I know part of it has to do with not wanting to get on my home computer after sitting at my work computer all day.

Oh!  I know, let’s just pretend I’ve been hibernating since last I wrote.  See, it wasn’t that I’ve been lazy.  I’ve just been asleep, or something.  Yeah, let’s go with that. 🙂

I hope you all had a wonderful 2017, and may 2018 be even better!

Ms. B.

The Boyfriend and I have been talking about dancing lately.  He is finally almost ready to try learn to dance with me!  It’s taken over five years to get to this point.  Yes, I am a very patient woman.  And persistent.  He is NOT getting out of this!

Boyfriend says he doesn’t understand the appeal of dancing.  I struggle with this, because I LOVE to dance!  It is an integral part of my being.  Dance has been a part of my life since I’ve been able to stand.  There is footage of me bouncing in front of the TV in my diaper to Shining Time Station.  I took Irish Step-dancing classes for five years, and have been taking bellydance classes for over ten!  In college I learned swing and ballroom dancing.  Yeah, I like to dance.

But Boyfriend doesn’t, and I believe him.  Well, sorta.  I believe he will like it eventually.  I believe most people would like dancing, given the right opportunity.  The problem is convincing people to try.  In trying to convince the Boyfriend, I began looking for an explanation of the appeal of dance.  This was surprisingly difficult.  There is a lot of information available concerning the physical and mental benefits of dance, how to dance, the history of dance, but I couldn’t find anything answering in concrete terms why people dance.  It kinda makes sense, because I consider dancing to be a very spiritual activity.  Asking someone why they like to dance is like asking someone why they believe in God.  There is not a simple answer for that.

I cannot speak for everyone, but here are some reasons why I love to dance:

  • Dancing allows me to explore all the wonderful movements and shapes my body can create.
  • When I dance alone, I think about sharing the joy I feel with others.
  • When dancing for an audience, the message I try to send is that I am happy dancing, and I want to share that happiness with them.
  • When dancing with a partner, no words need to be spoken.  We communicate through movement.
  • When dancing with a crowd, I feel empowered and connected to humanity as a whole.  Here we are, together, in this moment, celebrating Life, and all is well.
  • Dancing makes me feel connected to the present moment.
  • Dancing is the closest sensation we can achieve to touching music.  Similar to playing an instrument, but with dancing it is a full body experience.

Why do I dance?  To feel connected – Physically, Mentally, Spiritually – to myself, the music, the moment, and the people surrounding me.

Music Monday 10/30/2017

I know, I know.  I’ve been slacking on posting.  The struggle is real.  Stick with me guys!  I am a recovering procrastinator!

The song I’ve chosen for today is Say Anything’s Hate Everyone.

Sometimes, life is hard, and you just don’t want to be happy.  When I feel that way, this is the anthem that I turn to.  It expresses all of my emotions in an upbeat way!

Music Monday 10/23/17

Whoo, I almost didn’t post today.  No good reason other than Life and Laziness.  But I must continue posting!  No slacking off!  Mostly!

Today’s song is George Ezra’s Listen to the Man.

I LOVE this song.  George Ezra’s deep tones speak to my soul.  Also, the music video for this is pure happiness!  Sir Ian McKellen is in it.  Enough said.

Seriously, aren’t they both adorable?

Happy Halloweeeeen!!!

Halloween isn’t my favorite holiday, but this year I’m pretty pumped!  Mostly because of the new season of Stranger Things coming out this Friday!  How excited am I?  My costume this year is Barb.

Really though, there are many things about Halloween that make me Happy:

  • Pumpkins.  I find pumpkins to be a very appealing shape, and enjoy all the ways they are used as decorations this time of year.  I will extend the good feelings I have towards pumpkins to all members of the Gourd family.  Plus, pumpkins as decorations have are a great time-saver, as they can be kept around to celebrate Thanksgiving and the Autumn season as a whole!
I do not include eating pumpkins on my list of happies because I do not enjoy the flavor of pumpkin in any form.  No pumpkin pies, lattes, breads or seeds for me.  If that’s your jam, then have at it!  You can have my share, then we’ll both be happy.
  • Costumes.  I’ve always loved playing dress-up, so I’m a huge supporter of a holiday that encourages such activities.  That being said, as I get older I feel much lazier in the effort I want to put forth. My favorite costumes I’ve worn are:

The Pink Ranger – I’ve been a Pink Ranger AT LEAST three different times.

Pebbles from The Flintstones – I got the dress for less than $10.00 and had a little bone clip in my hair.  The bone clip got lost by the end of the night.

A Mermaid – Mumsy made this costume for me and it was AMAZING!!!  This had the coolest mermaid tail I’ve ever seen still to this day.

  • Black Cats.  I love all cats anyway, but black cats are so pretty!  I also own a black cat.  Here’s a picture of her looking like she’s been summoned from a magic book:

  • Halloween Movies.  I don’t mean Horror films.  I’m thinking about movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, Hocus Pocus, and of course, The Disney Channel’s Halloweentown.
  • Candy.  When I was a kid, I didn’t like that Halloween candy was smaller than a regular sized bar.  As an adult, those bite-size chunks are exactly what I want.  My body definitely can’t metabolize sugar the way it used to.
  • Everything that Follows.  Halloween marks the beginning of the Holiday season.  Yay Thanksgiving!  Yay Christmas!!!  Yay Birthdays (for my family)!  Yay New Year’s Eve (the night Boyfriend and I met)!

Now that I’ve made this list I’m going to grab a pumpkin and my cat and watch The Addams Family dressed as Barb while eating candy.

May your Halloween be Happy!

Ms. B.

Music Monday 10/16/17

Today’s song is Vengaboys’ Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!

I first heard this song in high school during dance class.  The BFF (I’ll be introducing her this week) and I are equally obsessed with this song.  It is so classic 90’s that just thinking about this song makes me happy and want to dance!  Also, the video is ridiculous and also very 90’s.

Enjoy, and happy Monday!
